What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles, on the body's surface, in order to influence physiological functioning of the body.
The first record of Acupuncture is found in the 4,700 year old Huang Di Nei Jing (Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine). This is said to be the oldest medical textbook in the world.
The traditional Chinese view of acupuncture is a person's health is influenced by the flow of Qi (chee) in the body, Qi travels throughout the body along "Meridians" or special pathways. The acupuncture points are specific locations where the Meridians come to the surface of the skin, and are easily accessible by "needling". When a problem occurs, the energy stagnates. Appropriate acupuncture stimulates these points and frees the stagnation.
How does it work
Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to produce its own painkilling substances. These substances are found locally around the needle site, in the spinal cord and in different areas of the brain. The effects are cumulative and because so many areas of the nervous system can be influenced, good results are frequently achieved when more conventional medicine had failed. Some patients see immediate results whilst for others it may take more time before they can feel the effects, these patient are normally suffering a chronic condition.
There are many diseases that can be treated successfully by Acupuncture or its related treatments. The most common ailments currently being treated are: lower backache, Cervical Spondylosis, Condylitis, Arthritic Conditions, Headaches of all kinds (including migraine), Allergic Reactions, general and specific use for Analgesia (including surgery) and relief of muscles spasms.
